HOW TO REACH POTENTIAL CUSTOMERS ONLINE

The world is full of people who like to give great advice on how to run a business but have no idea what they are talking about. One is bound to hear from living room ‘philosophers’ and ‘gurus’ things like ‘ you have just got to get your name out there and run some ads’ or ‘you’ve  just got to get in front of more people’ and a lot of other obsolete and time wasting techniques when it comes to marketing.

The truth is, just making an attention grabbing TV commercial is not going to cut it anymore. It’s the age of YouTube, Facebook, cable TV and internet smartphones. If a company needs to make its presence known it would have to adhere to more aggressive but efficient methods of marketing and advertising.

The way to a profitable marketing campaign is to know WHERE, TO WHOM and HOW to market the product or service. The days of cold calling are long gone. This article will give answers to all these questions in the context of e-marketing.

The first step is to identify the target market as accurately and realistically as possible. Globalization and technology has opened doors for any entrepreneur in any part of the world to market to wherever and whoever he/she feels appropriate. To do this effectively, dividing the market into different segments (segmentation) is put into practice.

One can segment a market on the bases of;

Demographic (age, sex, ethnicity, education, occupation, income and family status)
Geographic (Location, population and climate)
Behavioral (usage rate and pattern of a certain product, price sensitivity, benefits sought from a product and brand loyalty) Psychographic (values and norms, attitudes and lifestyle)

Once the segmentation is done, triangulating the target market from a population becomes easier and the targets become much more realistic and achievable.
Now comes the easy part. If the commodity is being sold over the internet, WEB PRESENCE is essential. Whenever a potential customer shops online, he/she types the name of the product on Google and in most instances does not go more than two pages of ‘hits’.

To capture this audience, Search Engine Optimization (SEO) comes into play. A website needs to be compatible with search engines with the right title, content and keywords. This is very important if you want your website to be in the top 10 links at Google or alike.
To determine the most effective keywords, try the Google Keyword Suggestion Tool.
To support this technique,

web presence should be huge, meaning creating presence on social, blog and forum portals in such a manner that Google shows the company’s hits in the first two of its pages even if the search query is not related to the company’s name.

Remember; DO NOT underestimate your target market. If they even get the slightest feeling that your pitch is ‘to good to be true’, you will loose them, then and there. Try to be honest, upfront, show off your competitive edge but also throw in a few minor weaknesses as well. It makes the offer look more real and reliable.

You can market to various online channels to reach your potential customers, some of the channels are.
Social networking – Facebook, Hi5, MySpace.com, Twitter, LinkedIn.

– Social Bookmarking
– Delicious, Propellor,
– Classifieds
– CraigsList.
– Kijiji, OLX,
– Backpages,

E-magazines – cnet.com, ezinearticles, goarticles,
News – Cnn.com, Foxnews.com, Nytime.com

Again, try to be more specific. If the product of sale is computer equipment, then advertising will be targeted to specialized websites like Cnet.com or PCWorld .com, whose main focus is computers and peripherals.

To conclude, there are three main guidelines one needs to adhere to;

– Identify your target market
– Increase web presence
– Be specific

The Best Browser: Chrome, Firefox or Internet Explorer?

It all started with Nexus in 1991, the first worldwide web interface. That year marked the beginning of the browser war. Just type in ‘list of browsers’ in Google and you can find at least 50 web browsers to choose from. This ‘storm’ of applications just to access the ‘cloud’ is mind boggling but one doesn’t have to find out which three browsers fight for the throne every month or so with there newer versions, add-ons, better UIs and what not. You can just keep switching from one to the other every week just for the fun of it.
Google’s Chrome has finally beaten Apple’s hyped up Safari which was, honestly, good for nothing. It demanded more memory, wasn’t much of a fast browser and the add-ons made the browser more difficult to handle instead of tweaking it up.
There are 3 main aspects through which one can judge, which browser is the one for them; security, privacy and performance. The Big three, Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox and Google Chrome will be discussed under these factors.

Security

It is a very basic but important issue. You wouldn’t want be shopping online without proper security of course. There are two main kinds of threats that need to be attended to by any web browser; Phishing and Malware.

Phishing refers to high – tech security threats referring to websites that trick the users into providing personal, financial and password information. Phishing sites cannot be easily detected as they look the same as the usually trusted websites like banks and mortgage companies.

Malware are a kind of virus that infiltrate computers without the user’s consent and can retrieve vital information from it.

The Big 3 have latest security technology for tackling these issues. IE is equipped with ‘Phishing Filter’ and ‘Malware Protection’ and Firefox is equipped with their equivalents.

Saving the best for last, Chrome uses ‘sandboxing’ technology which actually is quite genius. The term ‘sandbox’ is used by developers which means running operations in isolation. Chrome uses this technique by limiting access of the browser operations within, meaning nothing can infiltrate the user’s computer as the browser treats itself in a completely isolated environment.

Privacy

This one is a tie. ‘InPrivate’ for IE, ‘Private’ for Firefox and ‘Incognito’ for Chrome let you use the browser without saving anything on the hard drive let it be passwords, history, cookies or cache. The only difference here is the fancy names they use. These features can be activated quite easily and can be found often under the ‘Tools’ menu.

Performance

The humorous ‘legendary’ claims made by Microsoft in their infamous ‘browser comparison chart’ [can be found on their website] comparing the Big 3 are quite bogus but one has to admit what they said in the performance section, ‘knowing the top speed of a car doesn’t tell you how fast you can drive in rush hour’, is sadly true. The Big 3 are almost the same in performance if u test them through YouTube and time them until they load a video.

So, the answer to the question, ‘which browser is the best?’ depends on you! If you like the user interface to be customized to your favorite rock band or your dream car, Chrome is the one for you, or if you like seeing the boring ‘E’ icon in blue all the time, go for IE. For tech savvies who want everything to be the way they want it to be, the Firefox add-ons do it for them.

What’s in it in Google Wave?

Google Wave is a new face in email services. Since the email was introduced some 40 years ago, the communication paradigm has totally changed. Today communication involves live communication, team communication, resource sharing and more.
Google Wave offers some of the most fabulous features; let us discuss some of them here

1.    Chatting within the eMail
Some years back Google introduced web based chatting to free some PC resource, this web based chat also had a feature to save the chat text within the gmail login, this was overwhelmed by the users. Now Google has brought another exciting feature whereby two users can chat within the email and it is saved in email thread, it is important to remember here that in Google Wave, chat and email are saved as thread, similar as in forum so that a user can keep a track of ongoing chat.

2.    Participatory Mail sharing.
Another great feature introduced by Google Wave is to add another colleague to the chat, this way the new participant gets a complete chat text and can click back and forward to see the incremental history.

3.    Linking to application like Twitter and Blog
One of the remarkable Google Wave feature is to link user with Twitter or Blog and enable user to directly post and view tweets or comments in Google Wave, this actually saves a lot to reach to the resource site and then sign in and then post a comment or tweet.

4.    Live Wave
Another splendid feature of Google Wave is to work live – you can play games, see live data, work live on document and more, this extra ordinary feature will change the workplace of everyone in coming days.

5.    Blog Management
You wouldn’t believe – within Google Wave you can manage blogs by creating new post, add images, view comments and more – all from within Google Wave, this means you don’t have to remember multiple account as you can create multiple Google Wave and set different post in it.

6.    Executive Deskboard
With live element in Google Wave means executive can get live data from the database and a user can set different wave to monitor sales, revenue, expenses, wealth from different regional and international offices.

7.    Sandbox
There are many widgets for Google Wave which is in development stage and you would see a storm of Google wave with lots of freebies offered by open source to manage your work, life and soul. Some of them are discussed here Manage your blogger account directly from wave – no need to login and create new post or view comments.
Manage your wordpress blog from Google Wave Applications like Customer Support, Games and more are to come in Google Wave environment

It would be a great communication experience with Google Wave – jam packed with communication, games, application management and more.

Few of the services I liked is I can manage multiple project communication between clients and developers by simply opening separate wave, we hope through xml conversion we can have user interface of project management software to reflect the status of project in graphical representation in the corresponding project.

Web Promotion strategy in 2010.

As we enter into 2010, E-Marketing is not as it used to be 3-4 years back. I remember those days when we could do viral link building and the website would appear on top results. Perhaps, you can still find some excellent black and white hat SEO techniques to bring the website on top ranking in Google.  But, this wouldn’t be enough in coming years, as you might be losing some of the concentration of potential clients in other location like Craigslist, product search engine, social places and more.

So what should be our Web Promotion Strategy for 2010?

Modern era E-Marketing is not about canvassing but it’s about consolidating. Instead of making 1000s of link back, it is good to find out target audience and serve them. While doing so, you may lose 20% of potential customers coming from different miscellaneous zone. But you may serve well to 80% from selective targeted zone; this would be like 80-20 strategy that 20% of marketing effort generates 80% of your business and 80% of your marketing efforts (SEO, Link building, etc) would generate only 20% conversion.

Now the question arises how to find out market status and tap those target audience. For this you got to do a thorough research, plus trial and error situation to find out which hub could give you maximum conversion

I would like to share here how a retail business B2C generates their average traffic

Google Organic Search            30% Google Organic
Google Adwords                      10% Google CPC
Yahoo/ MSN                            15% Other Search Engine
Yahoo/MSN Ads                      5% Other CPC
Facebook                                10% Social Marketing
Craigslist                                10% Auction Sites
Rest from other source           20% others sources like review sites, blogs and news.news.

The above is an average traffic results, the percentage may varies like instead of Facebook a B2C seller would have generated their traffic from Yahoo Answer or some other Social Sites but it is recommended to maintain this KPI as it minimizing risk of totally depending on Google for conversion.

The next generation boom will flush out all the paid advertisement and various models like Affiliation program, CPA and other would be in highlight, this shows that more and more businesses feel comfortable to pay high percentage on sales on sure conversion.
Finally, retaining the customer is important too, you may retain customer through newsletter, RSS, Seasonal Greetings and more as it cost so high to make a new customer, why leave them for other customer to cash them.

Using analytics on day-to-day basis and further mining the information reflecting the biography of users and conversion patterns is another important task to be undertaken.
This helps you to keep a track on visitors coming onto the website through different keywords and demography.

Further to conventional marketing channel, it is equally important to try new marketing channels like Pod casting, Survey, and Review Sites and Discount this gives you an edge over other sellers to reach hybrid next generation customers.

Wishing you all a happy and prosperous 2010.

How can I market outside USA?

International Catalogue Sales is a great opportunity for US Economy. For several years US Product through catalog, have ruled international market. Even today, US products are in high demand and international buyers are willing to pay premium price for US Products. Here we will discuss various channels to market products and some ideas on how to minimize online payment and other risk that might occur during international sales.

1.    Reaching International Buyers:  English is widely spoken, so initial efforts should be put into reaching English Speaking customers worldwide, this could be done through search engine, portal sides, local magazine, Radio and TV Media, local ezine, local bloggers and more

2.    Setting up local customer support with local phone directing to main support number
in US or contract local call center to provide sales and support.

3.    Listing into local directories and search engine.

4.    Signing up an agreement with local distributor to represent you locally.

5.    Setting up regional sales manager to facilitate country and city based sales.

6.    Add language translation and payment option in different currency

7.    Promote sites in various International and local B2B and Trade Show websites

These are some of the quick action that small businesses could take to get the sales net expanded. Let’s study few best practices on how to reach international clientele.

1.    Many US magazine manages their subscriptions through their presence in Amsterdam to distribute their magazine to Europe and Asia, with this setup, magazine are effectively and economically distributed and returned for bad address or some other reason, not only this, the Amsterdam based distribution company also manages subscription payment status and send them invoice at the end of subscription period.

2.    Another option is to have agreement with local vendor who imports similar product / services, this potential small investor could be reached through international or local exhibition and direct contacts.

Let’s talk few points on how to mitigate risk

1.    There are different level of risk depends on the business model, this risk may involved during transaction and/or shipping Payment risk involved fraud cards or chances of charge back. How to get safe from such transaction, first of all filter all those countries that could bring high level of transactional risk, secondly call those individual to verify that they are the rightful owner of the card and get a scan copy of card and a sign agreement of sales.

Second level of risk is of shipping fraud, in order to get secured with such risk, It is always advisable to send the product/services to the address mentioned on the credit card, secondly ask the courier to get a photo verification ID and a signature of receipt and finally check the address on the web if it is a valid customer

2.    There can be other type risk, if a representative has been appointed, it is always recommended to sign an agreement with local formalities, US law will not apply to Cambodia law and an agreement bounding according to local law must be prepared.
The above is a comprehensive experience shared – there could be many other best practices to be explored.

Getting Things Right

To make money on the Internet is not as easy as everybody seems it is, and usually that same thinking causes failure in most people. Here are some tips to help people from giving up and failing online, and maybe eventually in finding their own shortcuts to Internet millions.

·    There are a lot of ways one can make money on the Internet right in the comfort of their homes. The idea is, online money is still taken from online work – no one makes money while they’re asleep, so why should the Internet be any different? If one really wants to make money on the Internet, then one should expect to work and put some effort into it.

·    Finding one’s own shortcuts to Internet millions is pretty much the same as finding out which Internet technique works for a certain person. It’s similar to finding an ideal job – the only difference is, the job is online and the work can be done right in the comfort of home.

·    A lot of people fail to make money on the Internet because they tend to slack off, take several breaks, and finish work earlier than supposed to. To make money on the Internet is the same as working in the real world – and it should be taken as seriously as any regular job.

·    Familiar with the saying that a failure to plan is a plan to failure? This is considered cliché by some, but it is actually real. Not having a plan on how to launch an Internet business is a sure fire way to lose money through worthless purchases of online tools and products. Have a clear picture of how things should be and how the online business should go and work from there.

·    Knowing where to start is probably the hardest part one has to take in order to find their own shortcuts to Internet millions. Find out first what business or venture one is going to take online and start from there. Also, do not think of whatever job it is that one gets to contract online as a pastime – it is real work and people have to put in real effort in order to succeed.
